Sonia Deol is the presenter of the weekday Morning Show 10am - 12.30pm on the BBC Asian Network.
No stranger to the airwaves, Sonia launched the Asian Network’s first ever phone in-show in 1996 and moves to this new weekday slot from the Sonia Deol Show on Friday afternoons.
A warm broadcasting style has also made Sonia the natural presenter for other radio programmes. In 2000, she joined BBC London to host Drive, a fast paced 3 hour all talk news and entertainment show and returned to the Asian Network in 2002 with The Sonia Deol Show; a phone-in show on social issues and current affairs. The show won a number of awards, including the Sony Radio Academy bronze Award in the Interactive category in 2003. Sonia herself was awarded The Asian Achievers Media Award 2006.
Whilst being a prominent voice in Asian radio, Sonia has also worked extensively in television. She has presented Desi DNA (BBC Two), The Heaven and Earth Show (BBC One) and was also the face of BBC Two’s Network East programme for four years, interviewing celebrities from the UK’s Asian arts scene to Bollywood stars. More recently, she has been seen on BBC Breakfast (BBC One / BBC News Channel) and reading the main news bulletins on The Andrew Marr Show (BBC One).
With a passion for writing, Sonia has hosted many live shows from corporate events to fashion shows, and narrated a number of documentaries broadcast on the BBC and Channel 4.
Sonia Deol is of a Sikh Punjabi background and was born in Birmingham. She completed a BA (Hons) in Humanities at Hertfordshire University and knew from an early age that she wanted to pursue a career in radio presenting. Her first broadcasting experience was helping to raise money for Comic Relief at BBC West Midlands aged just fourteen.
A superb, natural and elegant broadcaster, she is celebrated on the Asian broadcasting scene and delivers populist and passionate radio at its best.
